| Vernissage Press is a publisher of illustrated books on the arts and folk crafts of Russia. The word vernissage denotes the opening of an art show. It is also the common name used by Russians for the great outdoor market in Moscow, also called Izmailovo, where there are countless booths for vendors of matryoshki, lacquer boxes, and souvenirs of all kinds. Following publication of its first title, The Art of the Russian Matryoshka, Vernissage Press is planning projects on several topics: the Russian lacquer boxes made in the villages of Palekh, Fedoskino, Mstyora, and Kholui; the hand-carved, animated wooden bear toys of the village of Bogorodskoye; and the blue and white porcelain of the village of Gzhel. How the Russian Snow Maiden Helped Santa Claus introduces both a bit of language, folk characters and traditions to children. These subjects are well known to natives of Russia, tourists, and expats. Yet little is published and available outside of Russia. Vernissage Press was founded to answer a dearth of good English language books presenting the fascinating arts, crafts, and traditions of Russia. Vernissage Press is widening its search for distributors and representatives in the United States and abroad. Authors are encouraged to contact Vernissage Press regarding appropriate projects. |
